Course Description:

If you would like to work towards a career as an ocean kayak guide, these are the programs for you. You will need to have a solid foundation of skills to enroll. Though the opportunity will exist to hone your skills, these programs are not designed to introduce basic skills. The focus is on group management, decision making and safety on the water while leading a group. You will be required to submit a log book, copies of a wilderness first aid ticket and VHF radio operators licence to complete your certification.

  • ACSKG & CFOKE Courses with Evolution Guide School - $1498
  • ACSKG & SKGABC Courses with Rainforest Adventures - $1550 + $115 (4 nights accomidation in Tofino)
  • Drysuit rental (optional) - $35 per day

What you will learn

  • Seamanship, judgment and personal responsibility.
  • Client care and incident prevention.
  • Group management.
  • Intermediate strokes including edging, turning, draws and bracing.
  • Tidal current skills including, ferry angles and crossing eddy lines.
  • Surf zone skills including side-surfing, launching and landing.
  • Navigational skills, including chart-reading, compass use, reading tide tables, interpreting marine weather forecasts, route-finding and navigating in fog.
  • 'Leave No Trace' camping techniques including site selection, camp set-up, waste disposal and wildlife etiquette.
  • Menu planning and camp cookery.
  • Natural and cultural history interpretation.

Prerequisites:

  • A reasonable level of competence with handling a single kayak in a variety of sea conditions.
  • Comfort and control while capsizing a kayak
  • Efficient assisted and solo re-entry skills
  • Efficient forward stroke
  • Previous sea kayak day-trip required, multi-day touring preferred.
  • Familiarity and comfort with wilderness camping.
  • Basic boat and gear knowledge.
